James Cameron's highly anticipated film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has collected nearly ₹80 crore (net) in India within its first five days, but its journey is not without significant challenges. Despite a strong global opening and the return of a star-studded cast, the film's performance in India has been noticeably curbed by the phenomenal success of the domestic blockbuster, Dhurandhar.

The visual spectacle started strong, raking in ₹19 crore on its opening Friday and peaking at ₹25.75 crore on Sunday. However, a sharp decline followed on weekdays, with Monday’s collections dropping to ₹9 crore and Tuesday seeing a further dip to ₹3.42 crore. This trend highlights the impact of Dhurandhar, which continues to dominate screens and audience attention, amassing over ₹571.75 crore and projected to cross ₹600 crore soon.

Dhurandhar is not just outperforming Avatar: Fire and Ash in terms of total collections but is also maintaining strong weekday numbers, collecting approximately ₹16 crore on its third Monday—nearly double Avatar 3’s figure for the same day. This domestic powerhouse has secured significantly more showtimes, particularly in major metro areas, impacting screen availability for the Hollywood release. While Avatar 3 recorded occupancy rates around 18-20% for its 3D English and Hindi versions, regional language shows also saw decent turnout, especially in metros like Chennai and Bengaluru.

For context, Avatar: The Way of Water garnered over $2 billion globally and showed an impressive run in India. While Avatar: Fire and Ash has achieved a substantial worldwide gross of over $340 million in its opening weekend, its comparatively muted performance in India underscores a growing trend. Indian audiences are increasingly drawn to local content, presenting a significant hurdle for even the biggest Hollywood productions, despite the enduring appeal of the Avatar franchise, with plans already confirmed for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.
